Trainees in this trade learn to size, fit, and assemble metal parts with close tolerances using hand tools for production or repair of machines and other metal products.
Key Responsibilities:
Understanding Specifications:
- Study technical drawings to comprehend part dimensions, fittings, assemblies, and functions.
Shaping and Cutting:
- Use sawing, clipping, filing, grinding, drilling, screw cutting, and scraping to shape metal parts as per required specifications.
Assembly & Fitting:
- Assemble parts using riveting, screwing, pinning, and similar methods to create a complete unit as per design.
Repair & Replacement:
- Dismantle worn-out, broken, or defective parts using hand tools and replace them with repaired or new components.
Testing & Quality Check:
- Test the completed unit to ensure correct performance and functionality.
Additional Skills:
- Perform basic machining such as turning, planning, and shaping.
- Carry out welding, brazing, annealing, hardening, and tempering operations.
- May specialize in a particular machine type or product category as per industry requirements.
